Penicuik Estate was celebrated as a gathering place for many of the thinkers and doers of the Scottish Enlightenment.

As we know from Sir John Clerk’s (2nd Bart.) notes, his Designed Landscape was far more than a garden; it was created as a place where nature could inspire ideas and creativity.
