At the heart of the Designed Landscape lies Penicuik House, our flagship property. Eclectic, quirky and full of authentic character, Penicuik House is overflowing with art and furniture collected over centuries of the family’s grand tours. With its 1,000m2 private courtyard spaces, nestled amongst 12 hectares of parkland, this is a destination like no other.

Designed and built in the 1770s by Sir James Clerk (3rd Baronet) as a Stable Block for Old Penicuik House with a clocktower and a replica of a Roman temple which once stood on the Antonine Wall serving also as a dovecote. It is regarded as one of the most important Palladian buildings of its kind.

The property was converted by the Clerk family after the great fire of Old Penicuik House in 1899. It is characterised by the reuse of salvaged architecture from Old Penicuik House, creating a striking original design.

Grand, iconic and eccentric, Penicuik House can be exclusively yours for weddings, milestone celebrations, corporate gatherings, away days and retreats. With eleven suites and five en-suite double bedrooms, it generously sleeps 32 overnight guests – with further guest accommodation in our beautiful collection of cottages and houses.

With two grand reception rooms each accommodating up to 50 people, as does the formal dining room. The house also features a large wood-panelled bar with an open roaring fire, a light-filled drawing room, and a sumptuous cinema room with enormous sofas.

The eclectic vibe continues outside in the eccentric Bohemian Courtyard, with its dining terraces, firepits, pizza oven and wood-fired Asado Argentinian Grills, while the adjacent Rose Garden provides a stunning croquet lawn and drinks terrace. Both are suitable for open-air and large tented structures for up to 150 people.

For larger events, the surrounding parkland and High Pond provide marquee spaces for up to 300 guests. And for those looking to reset and reinvigorate, Penicuik House’s secluded sunken garden is home to a yoga studio, well-equipped gym, sauna, giant cedar hot tub and cold plunge.

Enjoy all that Penicuik House has to offer for your most special occasions or an indulgent weekend away with friends and family.
