Hurley Cave is perhaps Penicuik’s most enchanting feature.
Created by Sir John Clerk, its forty-metre tunnel and cool grotto were inspired by classical philosophy and the great landscape gardens of the Enlightenment. Traversing the passage from shadow to light echoes the journey from darkness to clarity. The domed chamber, inscribed with Tenebrosa Occultaque Cave, “Beware of dark and hidden things”, offers a gentle invitation to pause and reflect. Twice each winter, perfect alignment with the sun sends a golden shaft through the tunnel, transforming the cave into a living observatory.
