Old Penicuik House was designed and built by Sir James Clerk (3rd Baronet). This Grade A listed building is considered to be the finest Palladian house in Scotland. ‘In 1899, the house was tragically gutted by fire and lay as a ruin for over 100 years.

After years of fund-raising, by 2006 the Trust secured sufficient financing from the Clerk family, The Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland, together with many generous donations from private individuals, charities and corporate bodies allowing it to preserve and stabilise the house. The 8-year project cost £7.4m and was one of the largest-ever conservations of a ruin undertaken in Scotland.
