Old Penicuik House was designed by Sir James Clerk, 3rd Baronet, as a masterpiece of Scottish Palladian architecture, famous for its Ionic portico and Alexander Runciman’s poetic ceilings.
The 1899 fire left its noble stone walls standing, bearing witness to endurance and change. Its restoration, the largest of its kind in Scotland, brought together years of fundraising, the dedication of the Clerk family, and support from heritage groups, transforming the house into both a living monument and a working classroom for new generations of artisans.
